Why YADBP? Just buy Diamond Back(grin)

You don't want to just call Dfree because 1) It will cause system failure with
repeated use and 2) it is VERRRRRRRY SLOOOOOOW for even small sized media.
You can do the same job yourself reliably and much faster. All the information
you need to determine free space on the disk is contained in the disk boot
sector and the FAT table, you just have to know how to piece it together. When
making your own disk free calculations it is important to remember that the ST
file system is based on clusters not on bytes. If you do it right, there is
no danger in doing it yourself and significantly less danger than letting
TOS do it.

Thank you Rolph Haglund for your information on the Epson Emulation
for the Atari Laser Printer.
To everyone interested in the subject, Atari has recently posted to
Genie the European Epson Emulation for their laser printer. It has
a few problems but seems to work well for the most part. It sure eats
up a lot of memory though!

Make sure you set it to binary mode (usually the command 'binary'). To get
ls to work after you have done this, you must set it back to ascii (with, you
guessed it, 'ascii'). If you still have the problem, try setting it to
telex (I think, something like that). Usually a '?' will get you a help sheet.

I have a copy of OS-9 Personal for the Atari ST. I would like to make contact
with someone who can help me bring it up on my system. I have a Mega 4, ICD
host adapter, Seagate ST251, and Syquest 544? (44 Meg removable). I plan to
put the OS/9 stuff on a removable cartridge.
Send Mail to JOHNBARNES@ENH.NIST.GOV (INTERNET)
JOHNBARNES@NBSENH (BITNET).
This operating system is being evaluated alongside of the the Beckenmeyer
MT C Shell for a possible article on Atari Multitasking.

Absolutely! Just make sure that you have the same (and complete)
font files. However the formatting is so fast it is often more
convienent to just reformat the *.tex files on the bigger
machine (this is what I usually do--- gets past the problem of
missing fonts).
TeX is sort-of-PD (copyrigted but free) complete packages can be
ftp'd from atari archives like terminator and cwru (best
package). You can also buy ($150?) a complete package from the
authors of a GERMAN ST port. Current Notes carries a
distribution for a few bucks ($6?) as well.

IMHO TeX + postscript beats almost all the of the so-called
DTP's available commercially... and it's (almost)FREE!

There were reviews in some German PD magzines i.e. magazines that describe
Public Domain software. They also had an introductory series on how to
install and use the thing. BTW, they were favourably impressed with the
compiler and they said so.
Greetings,
Martin

I have had the pleasure of attending Atari club meetings in a couple of cities
including the TAF (Toronto Atari Federation ...or similar name) in 1987 and
agree with Richard. We all know piracy exists in the ST community but even
if Rob saw the kind of thing he mentions in one place it does not mean ALL ST
clubs are meant for this...I have no ulterior mtive in saying this as I do not
even belong to any CLub or Association.....

Wish all students here would go for the ST...they can run Lotus123 for
assignmenmts under a PC emulator, write their reports on Macwrite with GCR
AND still have the power of the ST for MIDI and games.... :-)
